The Westing Game

One School, One Book 2025

School-wide Read Along for the Whole Family to Enjoy!!

Join the Russell family for lots of reading fun! This year we will be reading one book as a school community. We will be reading The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. In this book, a group of strangers all living in the same apartment block are brought together as potential heirs to the fortune of a man living beside the apartments in a mansion. With 200 million dollars up for grabs, who will put together the clues of the Westing Game and take the prize?

This school wide activity focuses on reading the book as a family. The goal of this project is for adults to read aloud to the child(ren) as a family. You can read at a pace that is comfortable for your family, but please complete the book by May 23rd. The copy of the book is yours to keep. Please make sure your child has this book each day at school through the 23rd as we will be using it at school. The calendar on the back of this sheet has the chapters broken down by the weeks we plan to read them at school. Students can choose to enter a trivia contest about the book. Prizes will be awarded.

Tips for Reading Aloud

1. Make it Special: Pick a special place where you can sit with your child(ren) and enjoy the book together. You can also pick a routine time each night.

2. Make it Exciting: Use your voice to make the book come alive! Slowing down, pausing, or changing your volume while you read makes the book interesting. You can even use different voices for the characters!

3. Make it Meaningful: Talk with your child about the book. Ask them questions to help build excitement.
